Android 4.4 KitKat on the Samsung Galaxy S4

Now that Android 4.4 Kitkat has started to arrive on Samsung’s flagship device the Galaxy S4, I have decided to quickly run through some changes with the update. I have also included some instructions to manually update on the SPRINT variant of the S4 only at the moment.

Here is a full review of the changes included in Android 4.4 KitKat on the Samsung Galaxy S4:

OTA Update Zip

1. Put the Update zip file (above) on an EXTERNAL SD CARD
2. Power off phone
3. Press and hold vol up, home, and power buttons until the phone boots into stock recovery
4. Use vol buttons to navigate and power button to select apply update from external storage
5. Find the MK2 to NAE update zip and select it

Nice Tim, you are the man. I was wondering when you were going to post this. I saw a link to the update on and was wondering if they were ok to install. Keep up the good work.

One question, any problems with the sd card? I heard there are some issues with the kitkat update and sd card access privileges.

  2. Todd Copi says:

Is it the full ota update tho? When I connected to kies, it said my modem was still mk2? Is that how this update is dose to be? Also, it broke my wifi, had to completely go to a custom Rom to fix it

  3. jeff sm says:

Do I have to be rooted to do this?

  4. HighPitch says:

Does this work for the sprint Samsung S4 L720T??? I just recently returned my S4 because my screen was not working any longer and in return i received a L720T instead of L720

    • DrOctagon says:

Sorry I am late to this conversation, but the NAE update is not for the L720T. The version for this phone is L720TVPUBNAF that went OTA on 2/20. While this update may work on the 720T, you may lose Spark functionality.

    • Jason Baker says:

NO! Theres def a difference. I’ve seen multiple threads about that. Check out XDA for your specific device

  5. Christopher Martin says:

Great job on the videos Tim! I have root access and also followed your instructions to obtain the native wifi function on my S4. Will this update have any affect on this, I wouldn’t want to lose this by updating. Thanks.

  6. Gary says:

does this work on my sprint S4 if it is rooted or do i need to unroot?

  7. Cole Mayes says:

Will this update work on the GT-I9500 S4?

  8. Jorge says:

How do I go back to normal after installing the update? Is there a way to uninstall the update?

    • Jason Baker says:

Samsung website. Get the stock firmware update. I’ve heard once you go kit Kat you can’t go back to earlier versions due to the difference of file structure. (Or something) The firmware is flashable via Odin pc

  9. cupitmon says:

I just installed but my Wi – fi will not come on.Anyone else having this problem? If anyone knows how to uninstall pls let me know.

    • Brian R says:

I have the same problem. My wifi is broken. When I try to toggle it on I get a security notice saying the action was blocked. Can anyone help?

      • Brian R says:

My original 4.4.2 update came OTA from Sprint which caused my broken wifi. I decided to try the above method by downloading the file manually and using the SD card….and it fixed my wifi problem!

    • Stephen says:

Yes, I also had broken wifi — but it was broken upon the firmware update that immediately preceded the Android Software 4.4.2 update. I took the phone to Sprint, they had to reset it, and then they updated it from there. Wifi came back on, and everything works perfectly — except that I lost root of course!

  10. Brian says:

Just bought my s4 and it’s running mk5. Will this not work since it’s only for mk2?

    • Jason Baker says:

Mk5/mk2/nae….oldest to newest basebands. You can root nae which is the kit Kat update. Hell you can root’em all!

  11. Andre Woodson says:

Can I root my SPH-L720 (Galaxy S4 from Sprint) after the 4.4.2 update? If not now, when?

    • Jason Baker says:

Absolutely! I do on a weekly basis! I’m kind of a flashaholic:) But yes you can. Use cf-auto root (you can find it on XDA) just make sure you use the right one for your specific variant. Used it a bunch… Never one issue! Hope this helps

      • Andre Woodson says:

Thanks. I already managed to root it. Now, however, I keep getting an error message saying that my “storage space is running out…system functions may not work.” I searched online and found out that this is a common occurance once you root the S4. I know I have plenty of memory. I have a 64GB card and 18.35GB available. Any suggestions?

  12. BIG LOU 62 says:

When will you make a new HOW TO ROOT VIDEO with this update?.LOSS root with this update.

    • Jason Baker says:

XDA… Cf- auto root. Make sure its the right one for your phone. Be warned….the Roms are buggy for 4.4.2. Still young. Advice: stock root and be patient

  13. Joey says:

Is there a root method? I just need my hotspot

  14. Hanane says:

  15. carlyle070 says:

Tim, I rooted my gs4 using your instructions a couple of days ago, including Hotspot activation. Everything worked fine for two days. Yesterday Google services stopped working and the recurring notification message completely prevents me using the phone. I was able to get in recovery and restored it to the first nandroid backup, but it still has the same issue. PLEASE HELP!!!!

  16. Ryan L Culbertson says:

Hello been a fan for few years now your videos have helped me root my phones from my epic to my s3 and now with the s4 I have done everything to a key but my com box on odin is blue and comes up com8 just hesitant and hitting that start button on odin just want to see if im getting the right files and stuff to root

  17. Christine Dudaklian says:

Hi there, noob here….I am on MF9 4.2.2 and have not been able to update yet because I’m rooted. I tried your update and it didn’t work, but I realized it was probably because I’m on MF9. Do you know how I can get an update to skip MK2 or do I have to update to 4.3 first and then to 4.4? I don’t want to lose my wifi/tether capabilities….my hotspot and to uninstall garbage apps are really the only reasons I am rooted. I have searched almost everywhere. Thanks!

  18. Robert von Giebel says:
