Alcatel One Touch Idol 3: Two Mid-Range Phones with a Premium Feel
Alcatel is usually known for making phones that people here in the US tend to pass over. They even make tablets that you can get for free at T-Mobile. Well, Alcatel is looking to change their image and reputation with two new smartphones that they just announced at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona. Alcatel is making a hard push for the mid-range smartphone market here in the US, and they just may be on to something with these two devices.
The Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 will come in two sizes, a 4.7″ and 5.5″ respectfully. The marketing strategy is that Alcatel is giving you a choice of whether or not you want to have a big smartphone or not. The common complaint from most consumers is that smartphones are just too big, and so Alcatel is trying to solve this issue by offering the “same” phone but with your choice of size. This would be great if it WAS the same phone. The smaller model will be cheaper but will also take hits in the hardware department. The 4.7″ variant will come with:
- 4.7 inch 720p display
- Snapdragon 410 chipset
- 1.2GHz quad-core processor
- 2000mAh battery
- 13 MP rear-facing camera and 5 MP front-facing camera
If you’re going to consider one of these phones, it’s the 5.5″ variant that’s the most intriguing. Of course aside from its larger screen, the 5.5″ Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 will come with:
- Full HD 1080p IPS display
- Snapdragon 615 Chipset
- 64bit Octa-core processor
- 2GB RAM/ 16 or 32 GB Storage
- 13 MP rear-facing camera and 8 MP front-facing camera
- 2910mAh battery
Both phones are running Android 5.0 Lollipop with a very light skin from Alcatel. The only difference in the UI are the pre-installed icons, and a swipe left will bring you to the One Touch Stream, a Blink-Feed like news and information hub. These mid-range devices are looking like the “budget” phones to beat for 2015. Expect to pay only $250 for the 5.5″ and $199 for the 4.7″. However, these prices have not yet been confirmed. So what do you think of the Alcatel One Touch Idol 3?
