How to Activate the Nexus 5 on Sprint

This has been a tricky subject for Sprint owners that have purchased a Nexus 5 from the Google Play Store. Below are instructions to successfully active the Nexus 5 on Sprint.

First of all, the Play Store Nexus 5 does not include a Sim Card. To activate the device on Sprint’s network you need to have a Sim Card. You have a few options on this front. You will need to either pick up a sim card from a Sprint Store near you. Keep in mind that there is a slim chance a Sprint Store will have one until November 8th (when the Nexus 5 officially gets released by Sprint). I believe the UPC for the sim needed is 760492013536 part # SIMGLW206R.

You may also order one online through Sprint’s international chat.  You can pay for 1 day shipping, or wait 3-5 days for free shipping. The Sim card itself should be free whether picked up at a Sprint store or ordered online.

Now your other option is to use an LTE sim card from another Sprint device. This is the option that I chose. You still will need to talk to a Sprint representative to get this activation done successfully. I used Sprint’s Chat service, however you most likely can call a technical support representative. Again, you must have a Nexus 5 IMEI number ready to go along with what device’s Sim you are planning to use in the Nexus 5. To my knowledge, the first 14 digits of the IMEI number is what the representative needs to use which serves as the HEX number to activate on Sprint. Hopefully the Sprint representative is knowledgable enough to handle this task. Luckily, I spoke to a fairly knowledgable one and got my Nexus 5 activated on Sprint (see image below).

Through some research some people may also find the dial code *#*#675#*#* useful to get into MDN and MSID settings.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you have a 16GB Nexus 5, these instructions should work. However, if you have a 32GB Nexus 5 you may just have to wait. The 32B Nexus 5 may not be in the activation system at Sprint currently. Good luck!Screenshot_2013-11-05-13-50-35

Per this link the 32GB Nexus will work on Sprint they have a workaround in place so no need to worry 🙂 https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/671988#671988

  2. Chris Dominey says:

Bravo on Sprint for carrying this device. Now just figure out how not to make it such a pain to activate it.

  3. Nathan Bryant says:

It was kind of common sense on how to do this. Sprint and Verizon aren’t GSM, but their LTE SIMS work the exact same way for CDMA enabled phones. If you already own a Sprint device and ordered the Nexus 5 or any other LTE phone that works on Sprint, then you simply pop in the LTE SIM. If you ordered directly from Sprint, then it will have it’s own LTE SIM in it. You just follow up and call them to activate or do it yourself under your account on Sprint.com.

Of course Sprint would make it more difficult than it needs to be. I don’t have a SIM but my Nexus 5 arrives tomorrow. So I get to stare at it for 2 days, until they open the “magic vault” that holds the golden SIM cards! Just tell your people to hand them out when someone comes in to get one! I cannot wait until my contract is up, I will never sign another contract with a wireless company. When they hold the upper hand they treat customers like crap.

Guess I’ll wait for till Nov 8th to pick mine up 🙂

I just activated my black Nexus 5 32GB with Sprint. It was really painless and only took 10 minutes since the phone needed to download updates.

    100% working.

  8. Leyo Mayo says:

For those on Sprint, did you guys have to pay an activation fee or got it waived?

Hey Tim, every time you use a different phone on Sprint, do you have to pay an activation fee?

    • Chris Chavez says:

$36 for the activation fee, but depending on how nice you are, they might waive it.

    • Ali Thanawalla says:

You pay $36 activation when you add a new line or when you upgrade…. You don’t pay activation when u merely activate a new device that you have or bought at retail…. If you have a Credit Union account OR have been a long time customer, call customer care and have them waive it for you….

  9. Tim Wallace says:

Finally got my SIM card today. With a little hard work, the Sprint agent got my 32gb device activated.

  10. Willie D says:

None of this matters, as Sprint LTE does not work on the device. Making it useless over their shoddy 3G network.

  11. Paul says:

OK, so there is a chat button on the main sprint website. Do not use it, the people there are useless. Use the sprint international support (link in main article). They actually know what they are doing and will get your phone activated relatively painlessly
